What's An Ezine and Why You Need One

A newsletter sent via email is known in webbie-talk as an ezine (pronounced ee-zeen). Most ezines include an inspirational, motivational, or helpful article as well as news about services and products.

Why You Need An Ezine

Marketing research shows that people need about eight to nine contacts from you before they feel comfortable enough to purchase one of your services or products.

There are many ways to contact potential customers and clients - mailing campaigns, telemarketing, advertising in various media. All of these methods are effective as contact points with people, but they're also usually pretty costly.

If you've been using one of these methods to market your business it's easy to determine your ROI, or return on investment. Simply divide the number of actual customers or clients you obtained as a result of your marketing method into the total dollar amount you paid for it.

This little exercise is a real eye-opener for many... often because they've never thought to track how their customers/clients find them. Many also discover that the marketing methods they've been using making the cost per customer/client financially unrealistic. After using this exercise you'll know which of your marketing and advertising methods are or aren't cost effective for you.

Of all the marketing and advertising methods available today, an ezine is by far the most cost effective.

If you have 100 or more email addresses you'll need to use a service such as Constanct Contact or Aweber to host your subscriber's email addresses and send out the ezine. Typically their fees start at $15 per month for up to 10,000 email addresses. Compare that to the cost of printing and postage for a "snail mail" mailing campaign.

And it's easy to track the effectiveness of an ezine. The ezine services offer tracking for your ezine so you can tell how many people received it, opened it, which links they clicked on and how many.

Tips on Producing Your Ezine

The main purpose of an ezine is to drive traffic to your website. Always include at least one link to your website in your ezine. Some ezine producers provide just two or three paragraphs of their article with a link to the entire article which is archived on their website.

In order to be effective, an ezine should be sent out regularly, at least twice a month. Less often and people forget about you. There are some daily ezines that are particularly effective because they're very brief. Motivational or inspirational quotes and helpful tips work well for daily ezines.

If you don't like writing you can still have an informative ezine. There are services that offer articles on every subject imaginable. Others who are in your field and who are not competitiors are often great resources for articles, too. Most will be glad to provide you with an article as long as you give them credit for writing it and perhaps a link to their website.
